Portfolio extension introduction

This portfolio extends on the concepts and opinions about ‘U.S. doctors objecting to data mining. The person that will be interviewed is a medical person who apart from knowing only about medicine, he has broad concepts regarding data mining in fields of science, health and environment. There are two key points where the portfolio it’s going to extend on, such as, how can data mining improve health analyzing it from a medical perspective, and finally how the privacy of the doctors is violated due to the use of data mining, as we know data mining or mashups contain personal information.

Criteria D-Portfolio 3

Criteria D:
Solutions to the problems arising from the issue

There are different possible solutions for the problems that are raised with the use of data mining in the field of health and pharmaceutical services. One of the most feasible is create new web applications that are maybe able to give more security to these data-bases that are being shared. This program or web application should have any kind of codes or password in order to prevent lots of people modifying the data that is being exchanged within the web. To prevent pharmaceutical companies of reading and analyzing not only the status of the doctors such as what they have done in their careers such as surgeries and clinical procedures; but also their prescriptions which let companies know what kind of medicines is being provided and how they can find a way to make the psychiatrics and doctors prescribe certain brand of medicine. There should be a non-biased organization that is the only one able to read and analyze this information and then they would be able to tell the people about epidemics without the needing of giving out the doctor’s private information.

If there is a password system and if the information is kept under any kind of organization people wont be able to modify the information being shared in this web applications such as healthmap.org and also they wont be able to lie on the information therefore showing reliability and also security. The organization is a good idea of tracking down the different sicknesses and epidemics presented without extracting any personal information about the doctors and what they prescribe to their patients because this situation raises to privacy issues and the information of doctors being shared is not good because as we know hackers can easily modify this information and also the different pharmaceutical companies wont be able to exert any pressure on the doctors.

Criteria C- Portfolio 3

Criteria C:
Impact of the Issue

There are many positive and negative aspects of data mashups on the field of health and science. A positive impact that data mining has is that people are able to find a huge range of information within one application; the data is transferred extremely fast and giving us information about the doctors, trends and also the customers. (Learning of Knowledge Management System, 2006). The data-mining bases can give us great opportunities to check about other doctors in the country that can also offers the service that you need; data mining help us to find the doctor that we want and gives us a background section about the doctor. Another advantage that data mining offers is how medical centers can carry out more research about different sicknesses and adding the data into one application making the data be shared and analyze faster. The data that is being shared is more “interactive, visual and understandable” (William, 2007).

During the last years data mining has been presenting some disadvantages as for example reliability. We don’t really know if the data that we are looking at is reliable and has a professional background because there are some people that create this website applications without even knowing about the topic being treated (William, 2007). There are also misuse of information issues because nowadays people are using more internet and are able to access all this websites application that contain important information about the health situation in the world (Heng). Security is also involved because there might be hackers that can manipulate the information that is being published in the health or pharmaceutical web applications and criminals can use hacking as a way to get information about these companies and doctors. People can use this information to maybe panic about different diseases, and also people will trust this information, which possibly not everything is true.

Criteria B- portfolio 3 fixed

Criteria B:
The IT background of the issue

Data mining is extracted and carried onto the databases a “warehouse system”; the data is loaded and transferred to the main program by wires that are in charge of modifying and manipulating the data. This software is capable of analyzing the data received and classify it into different categories that are determined by the similar and different characteristics within the data. After the data is classified into different groups it has to be transformed so people are able to read it. The data is visualized by using some graphic programs. The technology that is being used is more sophisticated than it used to be few years ago; the application is faster due to the sizes of the databases. More data is being shared and the faster the systems the more data can be shared. The data is going to be transferred faster because better applications and faster processors are going to be created making more data to be shared in one web application and allow the people to contribute to the different categories of data being shared.
There are some vendors of this software such as SAS and IBM (Stacy Cowley, 2005). The next graph will show a general overview of how data mining works

The US doctors object to data mining because the web application can share large scales of information and companies are being able to read and analyze the doctor’s prescriptions leading to pressure from the companies to the doctors in order to make them to use or to prescribe more medicine from a certain company. Data mining allows this because it provides a huge range of data bases joined into one application, the software is capable of analyze similarities and difference between data bases and then is able to classify the data according to the relationships presented with it. (Anderson). There are four types of categories in which data is being classified; for example: classes: which places data in destined groups; clusters: the data is categorized as “logical relationships or consumer preferences” which is a clear example of the issue that is being analyzed in this portfolio; within this group the data is identified by different companies or “market segment or consumer affinities”.

Criteria B- portfolio 3

Criteria B:
The IT background of the issue

When data extracted from different sources is combined in a web application is known as mashups. There are different kinds of mashups such as enterprise mashups; these mashups allow the people to share information between different places and exchange perspectives of different kinds. There are some aspects that this type of website application has to cover in order to be considered a mashup for example: users are allowed to consume or use different data sources, also the creating of new websites applications that offer new pieces of information which can be customize or filtered. Other examples such as the cooperation of users to share more confident information having into account the aspects of security and reliability (John Crupi, 2007).

The US doctors object to data mining because the web application can share large scales of information and companies are being able to read and analyze the doctor’s prescriptions leading to pressure from the companies to the doctors in order to make them to use or to prescribe more medicine from a certain company. Criteria A- Portfolio 3 Data Mashups

Paola Andrea Cortes
11-D
Criteria A: Presentation of the issue

The combining of different kinds of data and compress into an application is called a mashup. Today the usage of data mashups has greatly increased the high demand of using these applications as tools that help to understand different technological aspects such as “juxtaposing data” from different sources such as places and time; the checking out of different webs. These webs have advantages as for example education has been improved (Horizon project 2008) because students have the opportunity to check data from different backgrounds and by this way having broad research that led to new conclusions and ways of perceiving the world. Also in other aspects as medicines mining which offers computerized dossiers, the doctors and prescriptions formulated can be easily identified and tracked down. A particular example is how “ US doctors object to data mining (Saul Stephanie, 2007) this article discuses the issue of doctors being against data mining because companies can easily identify the doctor and what drugs is he formulating to his patients. The negative side of this webs is how some hackers use the mashups in order to collect information from different places and use that to attack data bases and business might get affected, and also the pressure that the doctors have when formulating medicine because companies can manipulate the products that are being sold and therefore allowing the creation of monopolies.

This portfolio addresses mashups focusing on data mining, which is a form of mashup it is mostly to extract useful data from a certain source to form webs that are specialized on something for example pharmaceutical supplies which is going be analyzed later. Ethical issues involved are privacy and security because hackers can easily enter to data bases and what involves privacy is the way the doctors are being manipulated and pressure is given on them since they are being tracked down they have to formulate drugs from a certain company.
